Mum points are currently at an all-time high in our household. Why, you ask? Because Ava, my wonderful, book-loving daughter, has been bitten by the reading bug. And not just any reading bug—she’s deep into a book about fairies, and it has completely taken over her life (and, by default, mine).
We are now the proud owners of an indoor “fairy garden,” which is really just a houseplant with delusions of grandeur. Ava is convinced that if we create the right environment, fairies will move in and sprinkle some magic dust around the place.

So far, the routine includes:
- Watering it daily (even when I’m fairly certain it’s still wet from the last soaking).
- Ensuring it has the perfect amount of light, which means constantly moving it around the house like some sort of diva plant that needs its best angle.
- Singing to it (Ava’s idea) and dancing around it (definitely not my idea, but she made me).
Despite our best efforts, the fairy garden remains exactly the same: a plant in a pot. But Ava remains hopeful, and honestly, her enthusiasm is pretty contagious. Even when I found her sneakily reading under the covers way past bedtime—because, you know, just one more chapter, Mum—I couldn’t even be mad. The kid is choosing books over screens. That’s worth at least a five-star parenting review, right?
Fairy Gardens and Business Growth—Who Knew They Had So Much in Common?
While we’ve been waiting for our fairy garden to flourish, I had a bit of a revelation about my own business. Much like our poor plant, I realised I hadn’t been giving it the love and attention it needed. I’ve been getting sales (yay!) but not the growth I’d been hoping for.
And before you ask, no, I have not been singing or dancing to my laptop. (Although, if that worked, I’d be all over it.) Instead, I took a step back, revisited my emails, made some tweaks, and put fresh energy into the areas that truly make me happy—building my own business. It turns out, when you actually nurture something (be it a fairy garden or an online business), things start to shift.
Funny enough, my whole journey into making money online started after reading The Iceberg Effect. It’s a free book (you just cover postage), and if you’re even remotely interested in making money online, I highly recommend it. It gave me that lightbulb moment and completely changed how I saw things. If you’ve been dabbling with the idea but don’t know where to start, this book is a game-changer. The biggest lesson this week? Sometimes, you need to pause, take a breath, and look at things with fresh eyes. When you’re in the thick of it—whether that’s parenting, running a business, or keeping a houseplant alive—it’s easy to feel like you’re running in circles. But stepping back from a recent burnout? Game-changer.
If You’re Feeling Stuck…
If you’re feeling like you’re just watering the same plant every day and not seeing results, I get it. Running a business, being a parent, and managing life can feel like a lot. Sometimes, just talking to someone else can make things so much clearer. So, if you need a little nudge, guidance, or just a chat about your next steps, I’m here for you.

Hi, Sarah!
I love the idea of nurturing my business like a fairy garden! What a wonderful way to view tweaking emails and polishing blog posts! I can’t thank you enough for this bit of whimsy! I am all too prone to take myself too seriously. I’ll take that focus off me and just “nurture” from now on 🙂

I have been so stern with myself and forgetting that this journey needs to be fun! We need to enjoy every second, breathe and smile….. just nurture them and they will grow x
Hi Sarah,
This is such a sweet and relatable story! I love how Ava’s fairy garden adventure turned into a lesson about business growth. It’s so true, when we put real care and attention into something, whether it’s a plant, a passion, or a business, that’s when we see real progress. Also, choosing books over screens? Definitely a parenting win! Hope the fairies show up soon!

Wish us luck! I already feel like I’m feeing the 5 thousand and doing the streets washing so I hope they don’t contribute to that too! I do hope her reading bug continues. Fingers crossed!
This was such a fun and relatable read! It’s amazing how a simple fairy garden can spark both childhood wonder and business revelations. Your analogy about nurturing a business like a plant really hit home—sometimes, it just needs fresh energy and the right kind of care to thrive. Also, kudos to Ava for choosing books over screens—definitely a parenting win!
I know! I don’t know how long it will last so I’m taking the win now! ha ha Thank you for commenting on my blog x
Hi Sarah – I absolutely love this story! Looking through the eyes of a child, their innocence, their wonder and their joy is a gift in itself. You obviously have promoted the comfort for her to explore her imagination and appreciate her little world. That is so cool! I have to admit that I cracked up a little at the part where I imagine you dancing and singing to your laptop… classic! You are so right and that we need to be aware of our environment and our opportunities to make sure that our business not only keeps up with what’s going on but thrives! Just like that plant, we need to be aware of where we need to be so that we can grow. This is greatness and thanks for sharing!
Thank you Ernie. I know their innocence is amazing. Only if we could bottle their magic! I may just have to start singing and dancing to my laptop in hope- I cant hurt right?
I believe in fairys! I won’t go into detail, but at different times in my life, I have not only seen them, but have been energized by them. Certain energy spots in the world reveal other worlds within worlds.
OK, let me explain. I went on a hiking trip one time to the top of Mount Shasta in Northern California. I saw a little gnomes at the base of the mountain and thought I was seeing things. I got to the top of the mountain and when I came down, I saw the gnomes again.
Then I went to the local bookstore in the town of Mount Shasta. There was a book there called the “Little People of Mount Shasta.” Wow. I don’t think I was ever the same again.
